So the general Whovian consensus seems to be this: The Christmas Invasion was great, even when it was very silly; we were all a little disappointed with New Earth, which never really caught fire; and Tooth and Claw gave us back what we wanted. The outlook for the series is good, but not guaranteed.

Anyway, regardless of which way the wind blows, here are the top 5 time travel in-joke clichés that we can expect to see used in the current series:

1. Woman in modern-day dress is goes back in time and is considered 'naked'.
Once spotted in Bewitched, when Samantha goes back to the Salem Witch Trials.
Last seen in Tooth and Claw, Rose's dungarees.

2. The time-travellers incidentally shape the life of a historical figure.
Once spotted in Peggy Sue Got Married, in which Kathleen Turner inspires the inventor of pantyhose.
Last seen in Tooth and Claw, Queen Elizabeth's haemophillia.

3. Time-travel causes parent-child role reversal.
Once spotted in Back to the Future. Pretty much the backbone of the plot.
Expect it in Reunion, when the Doctor meets Sarah Jane.

4. Spinning around large objects reallyreallyreally fast does ker-razy things with time.
Once spotted in Superman and most Star Trek movies.
Expect it in The Impossible Planet, in which the Tardis will spin around said planet reallyreallyreally fast, causing ker-razy happenings.

5. In the present day, everyone looks normal. As soon as you step outside of the timeline, people look like famous singers.
Once spotted in Freejack - Mick Jagger's finest acting hour.
Expect it in small, Billie Piper-shaped doses.
